07.02.12 Tickets selling fast for Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge
Leeds Rhinos have announced that there are fewer than 200 tickets left for the Tetley’s South Stand at Headingley Carnegie for the eagerly awaited Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge against Manly on Friday 17th February, kick off 8pm.
The club announced last week that an extra 1,500 tickets had been made available for the famous terrace and fans have been quick to snap them up. With interest set to increase with arrival of the NRL Champions in the UK this weekend fans are being urged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Just over 3,000 tickets remain on sale for the game however a bumper crowd is already ensured for the clash of the Champions at Headingley Carnegie, for the first time.
Commenting on the rise in ticket sales Rhinos Head of Marketing Abigail Furniss said, “There has been a great deal of interest in the match in the last week especially with our own season having kicked off last week. The Tetley’s South Stand is obviously always popular and we were delighted to be able to increase the capacity last week and the response to that has justified the work carried out during the winter. There a limited numbers of seats left available plus tickets for the Carnegie Stand terrace and the Western Terrace. It is shaping up to be an incredible night at Headingley Carnegie and an occasion not to be missed.”
Tickets for the Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge are priced from £15 for juniors and concessions and can be purchased direct from Leeds Rhinos via the Headingley Carnegie Stadium Ticket Sales Office or by calling 0871 423 1315 (Calls are charged at 10p per minute – calls from mobiles may vary). 06.02.12 No excuses for Manly says Sea Eagles coach
Manly Sea Eagles are bracing themselves for the freezing weather as they prepare to meet Leeds at Headingley Carnegie in the Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge.
The Sea Eagles will fly out from Sydney on Friday , where the temperature is expected to be above 20 degrees, and landing in England as Europe is gripped by an intense cold snap.
Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey acknowledges acclimatising fully will be near impossible before the February 17 clash at Headingley Carnegie.
He said: “The fields are frozen over there and the snow’s coming down from what we can tell.
“The conditions here this summer haven’t been great and we’ve trained on wet and boggy fields but obviously nothing to that extent.
“There is nothing you can really do to combat weather like that but we’ll have a few days to get used to it.
“The cold will be a challenge for any Australian side and it’ll be interesting to see how we handle it.
“We’ll just get on with it, put up with it and put on a good performance.”
Manly have recent experience to draw on, however, as they head into their second WCC in three years. In 2009 the Sea Eagles beat Leeds 28-20 to end a five-year barren run by Australian clubs.
“They (Leeds) are very similar to the team we played three years ago,” Toovey added.
“We know what they are about. They are a big, mobile side with a lot of skill on the edges.
“They are going to be tough to beat, particularly in those conditions.”
Unlike three years ago, the Sea Eagles will spend just over a week in England and play no lead-up game before the WCC.
The Eagle’s coach said: “We’ve got a job to do and we want to come back with that trophy.
“It’s also a reward for them for last year and a bit of a bonding exercise and we want to show people out there that we were the Premiership team last year and we’re going to give it a good crack to go back-to-back.
“We’ve got a team good enough to be up there again this year.”
Manly lost 38-6 to Cronulla in a warm-up on Friday night but were without several key players. The squad to take on Leeds contains 14 players from last year’s grand final-winning side.
Manly squad: Brett Stewart, David Williams, Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai, Michael Oldfield, Kieran Foran, Daly Cherry-Evans, Brent Kite, Matt Ballin, Jason King, Tony Williams, Glenn Stewart, Anthony Watmough, Jamie Buhrer, Vic Mauro, Darcy Lussick, George Rose, Joe Galuvao, Ben Farrar, Dean Whare.
Tickets for the Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge are priced from £22 and can be purchased direct from Leeds Rhinos via the Headingley Carnegie Stadium Ticket Sales Office or by calling 0871 423 1315 (Calls are charged at 10p per minute – calls from mobiles may vary). Fans can also purchase their tickets online at www.therhinos.co.uk/buytickets 24 hours a day or direct from the RFL on 0844 856 1113 or from www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk.
06.02.12 Sea Eagles World Club Challenge squad list
Manly Sea Eagles have announced a full-strength squad to travel to England for next week’s Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge against Leeds Rhinos.
The Sea Eagles toppled the Rhinos 28-20 to win the 2009 World Club Challenge and, with no serious injuries amongst his starting team list, head coach Geoff Toovey says they’re in a great position to deliver a repeat victory.
But the Rhinos, who are aiming for a record third world title this year, aren’t going to roll over easily and Toovey has no such expectations.
“We’re going over with the right attitude,” Toovey said. “We want to win.”
The long trip over to Leeds is sure to take its toll on the players and Manly’s new helmsman says the right preparation is more important than ever.
With England currently experiencing a cold snap, he even suggested some winter weather conditioning for the players.
“We’re planning to go down to the beach, dump a whole heap of ice in the water and make the guys swim around in it then get out and try to pass the ball,” he joked.
“Just kidding, there’s not much you can do about the conditions.”
Tickets are still available for the game by calling 0871 423 1315* (*calls cost 10p per minute and may be more from a mobile) or online at www.therhinos.co.uk/buytickets

19.01.12 – Wolfman ready to hunt down Rhinos in World Club Challenge
Manly Sea Eagles winger Dave Williams is in line to make a return to competitive Rugby League when his side face Leeds Rhinos in the Heinz BigSoup World Club Challenge at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Friday February 17 (8.00pm).
Williams missed out on Manly’s NRL title winning campaign last season after fracturing his neck during a match against Melbourne Storm and after completing a five month rehabilitation process, the powerful winger, nicknamed Wolfman, has set his sights on ensuring Manly are crowned the best Rugby League club in the world.
“I’m clear to start contact training and will be right to play if I get selected for the World Club Challenge,” said Williams.
“I’ve been able to train at a certain level up until now, so it’ll be great to take it to the next level.”
February’s clash will be the second time in four years that Manly and Leeds have gone head-to-head for the right to be called the world’s best rugby league club and with the Sea Eagles having won 28-20 back in 2009, this year’s contest promises to be a fascinating encounter.
Tickets for the Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge are priced from £15 and can be purchased direct from Leeds Rhinos via the Headingley Carnegie Stadium Ticket Sales Office or over the phone on 0871 423 1315 (Calls are charged at 10p per minute – calls from mobiles may vary).
